Handling a Sticky Recommendation

EMAIL TO JOHN INOYE

Recommendation for Peggy Chafez

Peggy Chafez has been an employee of this office for the past ten years and has worked hard to maintain her position amongst us. Her job description includes the designing, writing and editing of a statewide newsletter. She is also a creative web designer and maintains the website of our office. Peggy Chafez has proven herself to be a hard working individual in our office. She has high standards and takes great interest in her job. Peggy loves to devote time to serious work I would say that Peggy Chafez would be an ideal candidate for an indoor job and would be an asset to your office.

MEMO TO THE INSTRUCTOR

As per your request I have sent an email to John Inoye. I have explained to him about Peggy's job description and the effort which she puts in her work. Only facts have been mentioned regarding her hard working attitude and the time which she devotes to her work. It is not necessary that John would find Peggy's attitude and work to be unsatisfactory like we do and hence I did not think it was appropriate to mention some of the problems which our staff has been facing with Peggy. Our credibility would not suffer if John does not find satisfactory because no lies have been mentioned to him by our office and only facts have been presented. With those facts, John should be able to judge whether Peggy would be satisfactory or not. Any misjudgment on his behalf would lead on to him being held responsible for the matter. It was important that we should not send a highly strong recommendation because that would certainly be unethical and our credibility would suffer. Any negative effects on our credibility would certainly affect our newsletter. Hopefully John would find Peggy to be an asset to his office and will hire her.
